Syracuse, N.Y. - No. 13 Stanford completed its East Coast swing with a 16-7 loss to No. 6 Syracuse. 48 hours after beginning the season with a big win over Le Moyne, the Cardinal could not overcome the Orange, playing in front of its home crowd at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse jumped on the Cardinal early, tallying 11 first half goals, while the Cardinal managed just a pair. The Orange actually scored the first six goals to build a 6-0 lead, before Lauren Schmidt broke through for the Cardinal. The goal for Schmidt was unassisted and her third of the young season.
Scoring the second goal of the half for Stanford was Sarah Flynn, who found the back of the net with just over a minute in the half. Flynn tallied her sixth goal of the season after scoring five versus Le Moyne. Flynn later added a second half goal for her seventh of the season.
Trailing 11-2 at the half, the Cardinal came out strong for the final 30 minutes. Stanford matched Syracuse over the final 30 minutes with both teams scoring five goals apiece.
Joining Flynn with second half goals were Leslie Foard and Dana Lindsay, who each scored a pair. The goals gave Foard three on the season, while Lindsay has four.
Annie Read played all 60 minutes in goal, finishing with 20 saves.
The Cardinal will now return home for the home opener on Friday, February 26, at 4:00 pm. Stanford will take on No. 1 Northwestern, who is also the defending national champion.
