College Park, Md. - No. 8 Stanford went on the road Thursday to face one of the top program's in the nation in No. 2 Maryland. The Terrapins proved to be too much for Stanford, defeating the Cardinal, 20-8.
The Cardinal jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Julie Christy. Leslie Foard assisted Christy on the goal and Stanford had the lead just 1:17 into the game. The lead did not last long, however, as Maryland responded with a goal 39 seconds later.
The Terrapins then continued with a run of 10 straight goals. Maryland won 12 of 18 first-half draw controls to control possession for much of the half. The Terps also outshot Stanford 28-6 in the half.
The Cardinal finally ended the run with five minutes remaining in the half. Dana Lindsay found Emilie Boeri for a goal that ended the Stanford scoreless streak at 23:43.
The two teams traded goals the rest of the half as Karen Nesbitt and Lindsay also tallied goals for Stanford. The Cardinal entered the locker room trailing, 13-4.
Stanford began the second half with a small streak of its own, scoring three consecutive goals. Christy scored her second goal of the game, again assisted by Foard. Sarah Flynn followed with a pair of unassisted goals and Stanford crept back within six, 13-7.
From there, Maryland got back on a roll, scoring seven straight goals to push the lead to 20-7.
Leslie Foard tallied a goal in the final minute, but it was far too late as Stanford fell 20-8. The Cardinal were outshot 43-16 for the game.
Annie Read was strong in goal making a season-high 13 saves.
Stanford will completes its East Coast road trip on Sunday when it faces No. 10 Towson at 10:00 am, PST.
