March 28, 2010

Final Stats

Towson, Md. - No. 8 Stanford dropped its second-consecutive road game with a 10-9 loss at No. 10 Towson. The Cardinal held a half-time lead, but could not hang on in a matchup against its second consecutive ranked team. The Cardinal fell to 5-4 and 2-4 versus ranked teams.

Stanford held a 5-3 first-half lead thanks to some stout defending and four saves from goalkeeper Annie Read.

Julie Christy scored a pair of early goals to give Stanford a 2-1 lead. The second of her goals was assisted by Sarah Flynn. Towson cam right back, however, retaking a 3-2 lead.

The Cardinal then scored three unanswered goals to go into the half up a pair. Leslie Foard, Karen Nesbitt and Sarah Flynn scored for the Cardinal with Foard's goal coming to Claire Hubbard's team-leading 18th assist.

The Cardinal stretched its lead further in the second half, scoring the first two goals of the second frame. Nesbitt added a second goal, while Amanda Schwab also scored, both coming on free position shots.

From there, Towson mounted its comeback scoring seven of the remaining nine goals. Dana Lindsay scored at the 16:32 mark to stretch the Cardinal lead back to 8-5, but Towson then scored four unanswered goals to take its first lead since very early on, 9-8.

The Cardinal would not go down easily as Emilie Boeri tied the game at 9-9 with 8:23 remaining.

Less than a minute later Towson retook the lead when Jess Dunn scored her fourth goal of the game, which proved to be the game winner.

Stanford outshot Towson 31-25 and had nine of 20 draw controls in the game. Read made ten saves and lowered her goals against average to 11.24.

The Cardinal will now return home for its final non-conference game of the season. Stanford takes on Hofstra on Wednesday, March 31, at 6:00 p.m.
