No. 2 Stanford Closes Weekend With 9-1 Victory At Long Beach State

March 28, 2010

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The first road weekend in three weeks for No. 2 Stanford ended on a high note as the Cardinal put forth a great defensive effort in a 9-1 victory at Long Beach State Sunday. Six Cardinal players scored goals as the team extended its winning streak to seven games.

Stanford (19-1, 4-0 MPSF) will return to action in two weeks, when it takes a trip to Hawai'i to battle the Rainbow Wahine on April 11.

Two underclassmen, sophomore Cassie Churnside and freshman Annika Dries, combined with senior Kim Krueger to score six of Stanford's goals, as each member of the trio scored twice. Alyssa Lo, Pallavi Menon and Melissa Seidemann all scored a goal in the game, as well.

In keeping with the youthful success, freshman goalie Kate Baldoni stopped four 49er shots and limited The Beach to just one goal.

The Cardinal put the 49ers into a deep hole early on, scoring four goals in the opening period to take a quick 4-0 lead.

The game would see a scoreless drought through the whole second period, until the Cardinal tacked on two more in the third. Long Beach State would get its only goal of the contest in that frame, but Stanford would clamp down on defense the rest of the way and score three times in the fourth period to put the game away.
