No. 7 Stanford fired off six scores of 9.9 and above to earn a season-high team score of 196.800 and beat Bay Area rivals San Jose State (195.075) and California (190.775) in a Friday night women's gymnastics tri-meet at Spartan Gym.
Senior Carly Janiga followed a 9.95 on the balance beam with a 9.925 on floor to win each event on the way to earning a 39.550 to capture the all-around victory. The all-around score matched her second-highest of the season and included a 9.85 on the uneven bars and 9.825 on vault.
Stanford (13-2) won each event, both individually and through its team scores. Shelley Alexander and Allyse Ishino scored 9.90s on the vault and bars, respectively, on winning efforts. But Stanford's biggest highlight may have been its team performance on the beam, typically the team's lowest-scoring event this season.
Instead, Stanford counted five scores of 9.8 or higher, including three in the 9.9's: Janiga's 9.95, Alexander's 9.925 and Ishino's 9.9. The Cardinal scored 49.425 on the event for its second-highest beam total of the season.
The meet, which featured all three Bay Area collegiate women's gymnastics programs in one competition, enabled Stanford to earn its second victories of the season over San Jose State (8-9) and Cal (0-11).
Stanford has now beaten Cal 20 consecutive times dating back to 2000. The Cardinal completes its dual-meet season March 21 at UC Davis before trying to recapture the Pac-10 Championship on March 27 in Tucson, Ariz.
