LOS ANGELES-- Jordan Pries (3-1) pitched a complete game eight-hitter and No. 19-ranked Stanford (13-8, 3-2 Pac-10) snapped No. 2-ranked UCLA's 22-game win streak to start the season, defeating the host Bruins (22-1, 1-1 Pac-10) 8-4 on Friday evening.
The win evened the three-game series after UCLA won 6-5 in 10 innings on Thursday.
Tiring in the eighth with two outs, Pries allowed back-to-back base hits, as UCLA scored its second run of the contest. Two more runs came in the ninth to make it 8-4 on a two-run homer by Brett Krill.
But the night belonged to Pries, as until the eighth, Pries had given up just an unearned run on four hits over the first 7.2 innings. The sophomore twice retired seven in a row, as Stanford scored seven runs in the fifth to erase a 1-0 first inning lead by the Bruins.
Pries did not let an early 1-0 lead by UCLA both him, as he pitched a perfect second and third inning prior to a bloop double to right field to lead off the fourth. The fourth ended with one of four double plays turned by Stanford on the night as Pries also retired seven in a row prior to UCLA's run in the eighth.
Stanford broke open the game in the fifth, scoring seven times to lead 7-1. A throwing error by shortstop Niko Gallego as five of the team's runs came with two out and six of the runs were unearned. The Cardinal sent 11 men to the plate in the inning paced by a two-run double by Stephen Piscotty and a triple to center by Tyler Gaffney.
UCLA starter Trevor Bauer (5-1) could not get out of the fifth, as Gaffney's triple made it 7-1 and chased the righthander from the game. An RBI groundout started the scoring, before a two-out RBI single by Christian Griffiths, followed by Piscotty's double and an RBI single by Jonathan Kaskow made it 6-1. The ninth hit of the game, and sixth in the inning, by Gaffney, made it 7-1. Bauer had allowed just 23 all season prior to this start as five of the seven runs came with two outs.
UCLA went up 1-0 in the first when Blair Dunlap led off the bottom of the inning with a double, stole second and came home when catcher Zach Jones threw it over third on the steal, allowing Dunlap to score.
Jones made up for it in the ninth with a solo homer (4) in the ninth make it 8-2.
The finale of the three-game series with be on Saturday at 2 p.m with LHP Brett Mooneyham (0-3, 6.85) going for the Cardinal against LHP Rob Rasmussen (3-0, 2.64). Stanford remains on the road on Monday when they travel to Cal for a non-conference game in Berkeley starting at 2:30 p.m. Stanford returns home on Wednesday to host Saint Mary's at 5:30 p.m before hosting Oregon in a three-game series next weekend starting on Friday.
