Cardinal Fall 2-0 at Cal

April 5, 2010

Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif.-- Chris Petrini (1-0) and Kevin Miller combined on a six-hitter as No. 30-ranked California (17-10) won a Monday non-conference affair, 2-0, over cross bay rival No. 22-ranked Stanford (13-10).

The Cardinal sent the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth following a one-out single by David Guiliani and a two-out single by Colin Walsh. But Miller picked up his first save after Jonathan Kaskow flew out to center.

Petrini pitched seven shutout innings to start the contest, scattering four hits, while striking out seven. Miller then followed with a perfect eighth and the first out of the ninth.

Three walks in the second led to a Cal 2-0 lead, as a bases loaded walk by starter Chris Jenkins (0-2) followed by a sacrifice fly gave the Bears a two-run advantage. Jenkins did not get out of the second, walking four in a brief appearance.

Three Stanford pitchers combined on 6.2 scoreless innings, as Chris Reed pitched 4.1 shutout innings, scattering four hits to keep it close for Stanford.

Reliever Alex Pracher kept it at a two-run advantage in the seventh, as Mark Appel put two runners on, before being relieved. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to load the bases, Pracher got a strikeout followed by a coordinated line out to Walsh to keep it at 2-0. Walsh handled the final out in the seventh, by catching the line out bare handed after it popped out of his glove at second.

Earlier in the day, Stanford starter Jordan Pries was named the Pac-10 Conference's Pitcher of the Week following an eight-hitter at UCLA last weekend.

Stanford returns home on Wednesday to host Saint Mary's at 5:30 p.m before hosting Oregon in a three-game series next weekend starting on Friday.
