STANFORD, Calif.-- No. 22-ranked Stanford (14-13, 4-5 Pac-10) split Saturday's doubleheader with visiting Oregon (21-11, 4-5 Pac-10), dropping the series after giving up eight runs in the final two innings to lose 9-6 in the opener, before Brett Mooneyham and Dean McArdle combined on a five-hitter in a 2-1 nightcap win.
Mooneyham (1-4) picked up his first victory of the season, giving up a single run on five hits over eight-plus innings. He struck out seven, as he left two runners on for Dean McArdle in the ninth. A bases loaded walk cut the lead to 2-1, before K.C. Serna popped up to second to give Stanford one of the three wins, and snap a season-high five-game losing streak.
It was the second gem of the day by Stanford's starters, as closer Alex Pracher (4-2) gave up five runs in the ninth after Jordan Pries pitched the first seven innings of game one, allowing just a single run on five hits. Pries left with a 6-1 lead, as the bullpen gave up three runs in the eighth and another five, all off Pracher, in the ninth.
Freshman Eric Smith had three hits over the two games, staking Stanford to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two with an RBI single, after two hits in game one, including an RBI triple. Smith came into the day just 2-for-19.
Zack Thornton (5-0) pitched 4.1 innings for the win out of the bullpen in the series clincher, allowing a solo homer to Colin Walsh to make it 6-1 in the seventh.
A three-run, two-out double by Jack Marder gave Oregon a 7-6 lead in the ninth, after three runs in the eighth closed the gap to 6-4. Oregon would tack on two more runs, before Drew Gagnier pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
Alex Keudell (4-3) took the loss in game two despite just two runs on seven hits over 6.0 innings. Kenny Diekroeger's RBI double in the sixth gave Stanford, what turned out to be, the eventual winning run, at 2-0.
Rain was forecast in the schedule on Sunday, so Sunday's game was pushed forward a day.
The Cardinal begin a four game road trip on Tuesday at Santa Clara and at Oregon State next weekend starting next Friday.
