No. 1 Stanford Opens MPSF Tournament With 10-5 Victory Over Arizona State

April 30, 2010

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Top-seeded Stanford opened the MPSF Tournament in winning fashion Friday afternoon, downing No. 8 seed Arizona State, 10-5, at UCLA's Spieker Aquatic Center.

The victory advances the Cardinal (23-1) into the tournament semifinal round, where it will face the winner of Friday's UCLA-Hawai'i quarterfinal. Saturday's semifinal is set for a 1:30 p.m. start.

Along with the pair of goals from both Dries and Seidemann, Stanford got scores from Vee Dunlevie, Kelly Eaton, Jillian Garton, Alyssa Lo, Pallavi Menon and Jessica Steffens.

Freshman Kate Baldoni got the start Friday and made nine saves to anchor the defense.

The teams traded goals in the opening period, as the frame ended 2-2. After ASU took an early lead thanks to a Sarah Harris penalty shot, Seidemann brought the Cardinal level on the very next possession. The Sun Devils would go in front once again on a 6-on-5 score at the 4:25 mark, but Cardinal freshman Dunlevie would knot things up three minutes later.

Stanford would take the lead for good with 3:18 left in the half as Steffens scored on a Cardinal 6-on-5 situation. Eaton would follow up just about two minutes later with a power-play goal of her own, and Lo would find the back of the cage just two seconds before the break to give Stanford a comfortable 5-2 lead.

Seidemann and Dries would combine for the first three goals of the second half, giving Stanford a commanding 8-2 advantage with 3:10 to go in the third period. While Arizona State would tally two in a row to cut things to four at 8-4, Garton would stem the tide with a goal of her own just 22 seconds into the final frame to make it 9-4 Stanford.

The teams would trade a goal apiece the rest of the way.
