Berkeley, Calif. - No. 11 Stanford improved to 8-4 (2-0, MPSF) with a 12-7 win over archrival California. Lauren Schmidt led the Cardinal with three goals, while Claire Hubbard had four assists to surpass the all-time assist record at Stanford.
After Cal took an early 1-0 lead, Stanford scored a pair of goals and would not trail again. Leslie Foard opened the scoring for Stanford on a free position goal. Sarah Flynn then added a goal on the first assist from Hubbard.
Hubbard's second assist was to Dana Lindsay to give Stanford a 4-2 lead. That assist tied Kelsey Twist with 70 for the all-time lead at Stanford.
The Cardinal entered halftime leading 6-4. Schmidt scored two of her three goals and added an assist in the half. Stanford outshot Cal, 19-11 in the half. Annie Read made six of her 14 saves in the half to keep Stanford out front.
Stanford opened the second half with three straight goals to push the lead to a comfortable five goals. Schmidt added her third goal for the hat trick, while Julie Christy got on the board and Foard scored her second goal of the game.
Hubbard scored a goal of her own before assisting Christy at the 7:46 mark for the record-breaking pass. Hubbard's 24th assist of the season was the 71st of her career, a new Stanford record.
Just for good measure, Hubbard added a fourth assist with 16 seconds remaining in the game on a goal from Carolyn Bradley. The goal made the score 12-7 and Stanford had its eighth victory of the year.
Stanford improved to 2-0 in conference with the win. The Cardinal will continue with the conference season this next Sunday with a game at Denver. The Pioneers are also undefeated in conference in a matchup that could decide the regular season MPSF title.
