Giuiliani Hits First Homer to Lead Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif.-- Dave Giuliani hit his first career home run, a three-run shot in the third as Stanford (22-17) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 8-3 win over cross-county rival, Santa Clara (18-24) on Monday.

Giuliani, a part time starter, making the start in left, scored in both the second and third innings, walking and scoring in a three-run second, and driving in three of the four runs in the third. Giuliani went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Freshman Dean McArdle (3-0), in his first career start, went a pre-determined four innings, giving up two runs on five hits for the win. Mark Appel pitched the final five innings for his second save, allowing just a single run.

Kenny Diekroeger extended his hit streak to 13 games with a lead off single in the second and came around to score on an RBI single by Jake Stewart. A two-run infield single by Tyler Gaffney made it 3-0 after Gaffney beat out a high chopper to short with two outs, and Giuliani and Jake Stewart both scored.

Giuliani made it 7-0 in the third with his first career home run, a three-run homer to right.

Brock Simon (1-2), who gave up the first three runs, took the loss.

Stanford remains home on Tuesday to host San Jose State at 5:30 p.m. The Cardinal travel to Long Beach State this weekend.

NOTES: The last two midweek games have seen the first career home runs by sophomore Scott Colton (at Santa Clara last Monday) and Giuliani... Stanford and Santa Clara play one more time, next Monday at Sunken Diamond at 5:30 p.m... First base umpire Greg Schmitz left the game in the bottom of the second with an unknown illness, leaving two umpires the rest of the game.
