Giuliani Hits Cardinal Past Spartans 8-3

SAN JOSE, Calif.-- Dave Giuliani had four hits and Zach Jones drove in three runs as Stanford (26-18) swept the two-game series with its county rival, San Jose State (18-30) with an 8-3 victory.

Kenny Diekroeger extended his hit streak to 18 games with a single through the left side of the infield in the ninth inning after scoring two runs on two errors and having a hard hit liner caught by third baseman Nick Borg.

Giuliani, who hit his first two homers last week, scored on both of his doubles, going 4-for-4.

Stanford took advantage of two Spartan errors early, scoring five of its eight runs by the third inning.  An error by shortstop Richie Johnson led to a single run in the third, before catcher Corey Valine inference drove in a run to make it 2-1, before Jones delivered a three-run double to make it 5-1 in the third.

Dean McArdle (4-0) took the win in relief with 2.2 shutout innings in which he retired the final six batters he faced, while Danny Sandrink pitched another 3.0 scoreless innings.

The Cardinal return to Pac-10 play this weekend with a three-game series against Washington State at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Friday's game is fireworks night, starting at 6 p.m.

NOTES: Jake Schlander was back in the starting lineup at shortstop for the first time in six games... this was the second of two games between the county rivals, Stanford won 10-7 at Sunken Diamond last week...  Dean McArdle (4-0) and Alex Pracher (6-3) have combined for 10 wins out of the bullpen.
