May 22, 2010

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz.-- Steve Selsky delivered a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to even the series with Stanford (29-21, 12-11 Pac-10), leading No. 26-ranked Arizona (32-19, 11-12 Pac-10) to a 9-8 victory on Saturday evening.

Stephen Piscotty went 5-for-5 with three RBIs in the loss, Colin Walsh added three hits and Ben Clowe drove in two with a double and home run as part of his three-hit night.

Mark Appel in relief of Brian Busick (5-2) gave up the two-run double to Selsky after the first two runners were charged to Busick on a hit by pitch and walk with two outs. Busick had given up just one unearned run and three hits in 3.2 relief innings after coming on in the fourth.

Bryce Bandilla (6-4), who fractured his non-throwing wrist in batting practice yesterday, got the win with 1.2 shutout innings to close the game out.

Piscotty's RBI single in the eighth, his third RBI of the day, gave the Cardinal an 8-7 lead. An inning earlier, Clowe's first home run, a two-run shot, tied the game at 7-7 after Stanford gave up five runs in the fifth to trail 7-5.

Kenny Diekroeger went 0-for-4 with a walk, ending his 23-game hit streak, the fourth longest Stanford hit streak since 1988.

In the Wildcat's fifth, an RBI single by Seth Meijias-Bean broke a 5-5 tie as a fielding error by Piscotty in left allowed the seventh run to score on the single. The Wildcats second homer of the day, a three-run shot by Jett Bandy  tied the game at 5-5. Stanford starter Jordan Pries exited following a walk, giving up the first six runs on seven hits.

The Cardinal scored four times in the third to lead 4-1, paced by RBI doubles from Piscotty and Clowe and an RBI single from Eric Smith. Piscotty's RBI single, capping three straight one-out singles in the fourth, made it 5-2.

The series finale will be on Sunday at noon.

NOTES: Stanford gave up a first inning home run for the second straight game, when Rafael Valenzuela hit a solo shot down the right field line to give Arizona a 1-0 lead... Ben Clowe was playing in his first game, and first start, since May 16. After starting at catcher, he moved to left in seventh and  made a nice running catch of a ball to lead off the bottom of the inning... Spanish broadcasters Abe Oquita and Carlos Castro were calling the game for 990 AM-Tucson for the second game.
