MADISON, Wisc.-- Stanford Sailing following a late run, is in 11th place after the first of two days of sailing at the women's national championships.
The Cardinal are the top team from the West, posting 179 combined points, one point ahead of USC (180). College of Charleston leads the field with 59 points following 10 races in the “A” Division and eight in the “B” Division.
It was an up and down day for the Cardinal on Lake Mendota . The “A” Division team skippered by Eliza Richartz finished in the top-10 five times with two third place finishes, but the two-woman crew also finished last twice.
In the “B” Division, Hannah Burroughs skippered her team to a second place finish to start, but the Cardinal finished in the front half of the bracket just twice more, finishing with 80 points.
Early in the day Stanford was in 13th place. By day's end it moved past the Women of Troy and Connecticut College and into 11th.
The women's 18-team championship runs through Friday, before the the team championship takes place May 29-31 and the coed championship concludes the season June 1-3. Stanford is one of just eight teams in the nation to be entered in all three sailing regattas.
