Cardinal Homers Past Spartans 10-7

STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford (23-17) homered three times and the Cardinal won back-to-back midweek games against its county rivals, defeating visiting San Jose State (17-26) 10-7 on Tuesday evening.

SJSU scored four runs in the sixth off of winner Danny Sandbrink(2-1) and reliever Scott Snodgress to close to within 8-7 following a two-run homer by Kerry Jenkins.

Cardinal though scored  two unearned runs in the seventh to pull away as Snodgress closed it out for his first save with 3.2 innings.

Sandbrink, who tired in the sixth, gave up three of his six runs in the sixth and gave up eight hits over his 5.1 innings.

Homers by Stephen Piscotty, Dave Giuliani and Zach Jones gave the Cardinal an 8-3 lead after five innings.

Piscotty's second home run of the season, a three-run homer to left, made it 6-3 in the fourth, capping a four-run inning. An inning later, Giuliani hit his second home run in two days, and in his career, blasting a two-run shot off the scoreboard in right center to make it 8-3 in the fifth. Giuliani homered against Santa Clara in an 8-3 win on Monday.

Jones began the fireworks, hitting a solo shot in the second to make it 2-0.

Stanford will travel to Long Beach State for its first ever three-game series with the Dirtbags starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m and Sunday at 1 p.m. Stanford returns home next Monday to host Santa Clara.

NOTES: This will be the first of two midweek games with the Spartans as the return trip to the county seed will be next Wednesday at San Jose State... Jones homer in the second was his first homer since April 2, fourth at home and fifth of the season... Kenny Diekroeger's second inning single extended his hit streak to 14 games.
