Eugene, Ore. - The NCAA Outdoor Championships got underway from historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University or Oregon. Stanford enjoyed some great results with Stephanie Marcy earning an All-America honor in the 10,000 meters and Amaechi Morton winning his heat in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles.
Morton led the Cardinal men by breezing to the win in his heat of the 400-meter hurdles to automatically advance to Friday's final. Morton cruised to a time of 49.29, the third fastest qualifying time overall. The final of the 400 hurdles should be one of the top events of the meet with two-time defending NCAA Champion, Jeshua Anderson of Washington State and Johnny Dutch of South Carolina joining Morton as world level athletes competing as collegiates for the NCAA title.
Durell Coleman also competed in the same event and just missed qualifying to the final. Coleman placed fifth in his heat with a time of 51.05. He would have needed to run about seven tenths faster to advance.
The other qualifier for the men was JT Sullivan who moved on to Friday's final after a gutsy run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sullivan needed to finish in the top six of his heat and ran most of the race on the edge of the qualifying spots, before digging deep over the final 400 meters to surge into fourth place. Sullivan finished with a time if 8:44.03, less than a second off his personal best. He is one of 14 qualifiers for the final as he looks to capture the first All-America honor of his career.

The women were led by Marcy in the 10,000 meters. Marcy placed eighth in the event to earn the first All-America honor of her career. Her time of 33:32.92 was a personal best and moved her into fifth on the all-time 10K list at Stanford. The race did not separate until about 4,000 meters to go when eventual champion Lisa Koll of Iowa State began to push the pace. As the field stretched out, Marcy fought hard to stay in the top ten, before moving up over the final two laps to place eighth and score one point for the Cardinal women.
The Cardinal women were one of 21 teams to scores at least one point on the first day of the meet where few finals were contested.
The Cardinal women also competed in the 4x100-meter relay. The team was made up of Arantxa King, Shataya Hendricks, Brittni Dixon-Smith and Griffin Matthew, but a mix up with the third handoff did not allow the Cardinal to finish.
Freshman Carissa Levingston was also scheduled to compete in the 100 meters, but was a late scratch.
Stanford will be back on the track in Eugene on Thursday with the continuation of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jaynie Goodbody will lead the Cardinal women with the hammer throw, while Madeleine O'Meara is scheduled to compete in the semifinals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The men will feature Jake Riley in the final of the 10,000 meters, while Dylan Ferris will compete in the semifinals of the 1,500 meters.
