BOSTON - Stanford freshman Sydney Payne scored her first collegiate goal to open the scoring and Christen Press provided the score that stood up as the eventual winner in No. 2 Stanford's rainy 2-1 victory over host Boston University in nonconference women's soccer action Sunday.
The victory was the first of the opening weekend for Stanford (1-0-1) and the second stage of a four-match trip that next takes the Cardinal to No. 1 North Carolina on Friday for a rematch of last season's NCAA final, won by the Tar Heels.
Stanford scored first against unranked Boston U. (0-2), the three-time defending America East Conference champion, when Lindsay Taylor took a shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Kelly King before Payne knocked in the rebound in the 16th minute. Payne, from Bradenton, Fla., has started each of the first two matches, beginning with Friday's 1-1 draw at No. 7 Boston College.
In the 22nd minute, Press increased the lead by converting a breakaway for her first goal of the season and the 46th of her Stanford career. The senior passed Marcie Ward and into fifth on Stanford's all-time scoring list, with 125 points.
The Terriers, however, cut the deficit on a first-half goal of its own, when Lisa Kevorkian first-timed a cross into the box in the 36th minute.
Stanford outshot Boston, 21-7, including 13-5 in the second half.
Two freshmen made their debut as reserves for the Cardinal, both at forward. Shelby Payne (Sydney's twin) entered in the first half for Press, and Taylor McCann, out of nearby Burlingame (Calif.) High School, entered in the second half for Sydney Payne.
