STANFORD, Calif.-Landry Fields grinned slightly when asked about Stanford's defensive effort.

"I'd like to think we came out and played outstanding defense this game," Fields said. "We know they are capable of scoring a lot of points at times but we did play excellent defense."

Fields scored 17 points and had nine rebounds in helping Stanford overwhelm Oregon State 59-35 on Thursday night.

Stanford hasn't held an opponent to fewer points since beating Princeton 58-34 on Dec. 21, 2005, at the Pete Newell Challenge.

Despite dressing only 11 available players, Stanford thoroughly outhustled Oregon State. The Cardinal held a 38-22 edge in the rebounding department and forced the Beavers into 36.6 percent shooting and 19 turnovers.

Beavers' coach Craig Robinson was a little more blunt about his team's lack of offense.

"Early in the game, we got three or four point-blank shots and didn't make them," he said. "That demoralized us, and we couldn't dig out of it."

Jeremy Green added 13 points for the Cardinal (9-9, 3-3 Pac-10), which improved to 8-2 at home. Jack Trotter added 10 points and chipped in with six boards.

Seth Tarver scored 10 points to lead the Beavers (8-10, 2-4), who lost their fifth in seven games.

Jared Cunningham hit a 3-pointer with 2:22 remaining to play to end a nearly nine-minute scoreless stretch for the Beavers.

"That was probably the best defensive performance we've had," Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins said. "The guys were alert and coordinated. Our big guys were active and made plays."

The Cardinal outscored Oregon State 22-8 in the first 13 minutes of the second half to open a 50-30 advantage. The Beavers committed nine turnovers, shot 33 percent from the field, and were outrebounded 14-5 during that span.

"I think it's a combination of a lot of hard work and more game experience," Trotter said. "There's a mentality that we need to attack and not let anything get in our way. It's toughness."

Drew Shiller hit a 3-pointer giving Stanford a 37-24 advantage four minutes into the second half. The Cardinal took advantage of a pair of Oregon State turnovers to spark a 9-2 run opening the second half.

Oregon State scored its fewest points since beating Oregon 29-23 on March 3, 1984, the year before the shot clock came into effect.

Stanford used a nine-point run to erase an early deficit and carry the momentum to a 28-22 lead at halftime.
