Jan. 30, 2010

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz.-Ty Abbott scored 29 points and had a career-high 12 rebounds as Arizona State defeated Stanford 88-70 on Saturday to keep the Cardinal winless on the road.

Derek Glasser had 12 points and 10 assists for the Sun Devils (15-7, 5-4 Pac-10), who had dropped the first two games of a three-game homestand.

Landry Fields entered the contest tied with Washington State's Klay Thompson for the Pac-10 scoring lead, and led Stanford (10-11, 4-5 Pac-10) with 22 points on 7-18 shooting. Jeremy Green contributed 20 points (including four three-pointers) while Jarrett Mann added 10 points.

Abbott hit six 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes as Arizona State raced to a 41-11 lead, and the Sun Devils led by 37 following a triple from Rihards Kuksiks with just over two minutes left in the first half to make it 54-17. Abbott went on to finish 11-14 from the floor and 7-9 from beyond the arc.

Abbott became the first opposing player to knock down at least six three-pointers in a game against Stanford since Mar. 18, 2005, when Mississippi State's Winsome Frazier buried six treys in an NCAA Tournament contest.

Arizona State led 54-22 at halftime, shot 56 percent overall and dished out 23 assists on 28 baskets. The Sun Devils were 12-25 from beyond the arc, including a 10-18 clip in the first half.

Stanford shot just 25 percent in the first half, making 8-32 from the field while missing its first 11 three-point attempts.

But the Cardinal came alive in the second half, outscoring the Sun Devils 48-34 over the final 30 minutes and slicing the lead to 12 with just under four minutes remaining. Two free throws from Mann brought the Cardinal within 77-65 at the 3:36 mark, and a unsuccessful three-point try from Green following a turnover would have whittled the lead to single-digits.

However, Arizona State closed out the game on an 11-5 run to secure the win.
