SoCal Invitational Central
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 4 Stanford men's water polo suffered a setback in its quest for the SoCal Invitational title Saturday afternoon, falling 12-10 to No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in a second-round contest. Earlier in the day, the Cardinal defeated No. 13 UC San Diego, 22-12 at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
The Cardinal (5-3) will now take on No. 8 Long Beach State at 8 a.m. Sunday morning at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center. A win would put the Cardinal in the fifth-place game at 2:40 p.m.
Senior two-meter Jeffrey Schwimer led the Cardinal with six goals on the day, while Peter Sefton and Jacob Smith each tallied five.
Brian Pingree made 13 saves on the day while going the distance in each contest.
In the morning contest against UC San Diego, the Cardinal jumped out to a big lead early, scoring seven goals in the opening period and taking a 13-6 halftime lead. Five more goals against just one for the Tritons gave the Cardinal an insurmountable 18-7 lead, and Stanford added four more goals in the final frame as insurance.
Pingree made nine saves in the cage during the contest, while Schwimer, Smith, Alex Avery and Ryan Brown all tallied hat tricks. Sefton, Travis Noll and Paul Rudolph each scored twice, and individual goals were scored by Porter Kalbus, Ryan Kent, Alex Pulido and Forrest Watkins.
About five hours later, the Cardinal and Gauchos were in the pool for the second meeting of the season between the two schools.
Stanford took a 3-2 lead after the opening period, but the Gauchos changed things up with six goals in the next period to take an 8-6 lead. The Cardinal could not re-establish control of the contest in the second half, as each team scored three times in the third period and once in the fourth to account for the final tally.
Schwimer and Sefton recorded hat tricks for the Cardinal, while Smith scored twice and Brown and Sage Wright each scored a goal.
Pingree made four saves in the contest.
