Cardinal Sailing in Third After Day One of Captain Hurst Cup

HANOVER, N.H. / SAN FRANCISCO –  Stanford is in an impressive third place at Dartmouth's Captain Hurst Trophy, while on the West Coast at the Stoney Burke Regatta, the Cardinal are in third on the first of two days of sailing.

Freshman Mateo Vargas and his crew of Rebecca King have the top divisional score at Dartmouth to lead the Cardinal. On the East Coast for the third-straight week, the Cardinal are within seven points of second place Yale after eight races with 103 points.

Vargas and King's low of 31 points, is 17 points in front of Yale's B Division squad after finishing in the top-three in five races and never lower than seventh. The A Division skippered by Nick Dugdale has 72 points, finishing in the top-10 six times. Dugdale and Anna McDonnell have the sixth-best divisional score of the 20 teams.

Kevin Laube's A Division has 61 points after eight races, winning three, but also finishing 13th and being disqualified. The B Division skippered by Ben Pedrick finished third or beter four times, but also 10th, 12th and were disqualified. Overall they have 137 points with Hawaii leading the pack with 86 points.

The women's team skippered by Molly McKinney and Tally Buckstaff have 202 points, for ninth place.

Six of the top teams at the Captain Hurst Cup are in the national top-15, including No. 12 Stanford. Harvard, the leader with 86 points is No. 7, Yale is No. 3. Cal's event of off Treasure Island features 27 teams from the West Coast.

Both regattas conclude on Sunday.
