Coed Sailing Second at Darmouth's Captain Hurst Trophy

Oct. 17, 2010

HANOVER, N.H. / SAN FRANCISCO –  Stanford Sailing edged out No. 3-ranked Yale to finish second at the Captain Hurst Trophy, one of the team's highest finishes on the East Coast in a decade.

Stanford came in ranked No. 12 in coed sailing, Harvard, which won the two-day event, No. 7 and Yale at No. 3.

At the Stoney Burke Invite at Treasure Island, Stanford's coed team was fourth and the women were seventh among 27 teams.

The Cardinal edged Yale 185-to-187 on the second day of races on Dartmouth's home course, paced by sailors Mateo Vargas and Rebecca King, who led the B Division with 62 points, 23 spots ahead of Yale. On the second day, the duo held on to it's first day lead with five top-seven finishes in six races and in 13 of 14 overall.

The A Division team of Nick Dugdale and Anna McConnell, finished with 123 points, eighth-best in the division.

In the Bay Area, only four races could be completed on day two because of light rain, as each coed divisional team skippered by Kevin Laube and Ben Pedrick, respectively, had the fourth-best divisional score.

So far this fall season, Stanford's freshmen class has excelled. Sally Mace and Oliver Toole won the Pacific Coast Singlehanded Championships, with Molly McKinney set to join them at nationals after finishing second to Mace to begin the season. In week two, Mace followed that up with a low of 17 points at the Bryson Women's Championships with fellow freshman Yuri Namikawa. Vargas meanwhile skippered the fourth-best divisional score at the Danmark Trophy with King, a sophomore.
