Schwimer And Smith Score Four Apiece In 17-6 Win At No. 11 Santa Clara

Oct. 29, 2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Stanford's Jeffrey Schwimer and Jacob Smith each scored four times and three others recorded multi-goal games as the fourth-ranked Cardinal raced past No. 11 Santa Clara for a 17-6 road victory Friday night.

The Cardinal (10-5) will now turn its attention back to MPSF play, as it prepares for just its second home game of the season next Saturday, Nov. 6. Stanford will host Long Beach State at Avery Aquatic Center for a 12 p.m. contest.

Along with the four goals apiece from Schwimer and Smith, Stanford got three goals from Paul Rudolph and two from both Ryan Brown and Alex Pulido. Porter Kalbus and Tim Norton also added goals for the Cardinal.

Both Cardinal goalies worked a half Friday night. Brian Pingree started and stopped four shots while allowing just three goals, and Hunter Ploch also made four saves against three goals allowed.

After the teams traded a few possessions to start the game, the Cardinal opened up the scoring as Schwimer one-timed a centering pass from Sage Wright. Schwimer would continue making an impact as soon after his goal, he got inside his defender in the hole and drew a five-meter penalty, which Smith buried. Paul Rudolph tacked on a third goal from the outside six seconds before the horn to complete a 3-0 period for the Cardinal.

Pulido converted from the right corner 58 seconds into the second period, giving the Cardinal a 4-0 lead. Santa Clara would get on the board for the first time on Patrick Weiss' goal at 6:27, but the Cardinal answered with three straight goals as Rudolph, Smith and Schwimer in the span of 1:07 to give Stanford a 7-1 lead.

Smith and Rudolph would add additional goals in the second period to cap off a six-goal frame for the Cardinal, giving the team a 9-3 lead at halftime.

It only took 2:54 after the start of the second half for Stanford to increase its lead to 12-3 thanks to goals from Schwimer, Pulido and Smith. A Bronco goal from Stephen Hobbs broke up the Cardinal's goal streak, but not its momentum, as Schwimer and Porter Kalbus got the lead to 10 at 14-4 by the end of the third period.

Brown would score twice in the fourth period and Norton would add the final goal for Stanford in the fourth period.
