STANFORD, Calif. (AP)- Dwight Powell is part of Stanford's highly-regarded freshmen class. He's the only one who broke into the starting lineup. Now he's showing why.
Jeremy Green scored 21 points and Powell added 12 points in leading Stanford to a 92-49 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday night.
"He's still a work in progress," Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said. "He's getting more comfortable with his role and playing hard."
Josh Owens added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Cardinal (3-0), which scored 92 points or more for the first time since scoring 99 against Florida A&M last Nov. 21. Anthony Brown had 10 points.
Powell, who was 4-of-5 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line, added a thunderous slam to the delight of the fans.
"It's always exciting to get out there," Powell said. "Right now I have a whole new list of things to work on."
Allen Smith scored a season-high 23 points to lead the Golden Lions (0-3), who have allowed more than 80 points in three of their first four games. Gavin Montgomery added 14 points.
"We just wanted to learn from this game. We see a team like Stanford play hard, and they play hard every play," Arkansas-Pine Bluff head coach George Ivory said. "I told them, 'See that move they made on you? Make that move yourself.' Remember what you saw here tonight, and take it with you."
Stanford used a 24-3 run that spanned both halves to gain control of the contest with a 59-31 advantage midway through the second half.
After pulling even at 27-all, the Golden Lions missed 15 of their next 17 shots.
"They played very well in the first half," Dawkins said. "They made shots, 7 of 14 3s. We did a better job of defending the 3-point line in the second half. This was a good game for us. A lot of guys got to contribute."
The Golden Lions reached the NCAA tournament last year with its first winning season in 12 years. They won the Play-In game before getting beat by Duke in the first round.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff choose to upgrade its schedule this year and opened with a 12-game road trip. The Golden Lions head to Hawaii for a game Wednesday.
Freshman Daniel Broughton made one of two free throws to give the Golden Lions a 28-27 edge with 4:42 left in the first half. Green hit a 3-pointer 15 seconds later and the Cardinal jumped to a 35-28 edge by halftime.
