STANFORD, Calif.- (AP) Jeremy Green was exhausted and dehydrated, showing all the symptoms of a stomach virus the last time Stanford played two weeks ago. He couldn't eat for a week, felt weak and still played through it.
With finals over, and many added buffets later, he feels healthy and showed it Sunday night.
Green scored all 22 of his points in the second half, helping Stanford beat UC Riverside 55-48.
"I can't really explain it since it never happened to me before," said Green, who is averaging a team-best 16.3 points per game. "I was eating a lot and letting the bug get out of my system."
Josh Owens notched his first career double-double, chipping in with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal (5-2), which improved to 4-0 at home.
Stanford outrebounded the Highlanders by a 43-27 margin, including 23-11 on the offensive boards.
"Josh is still battling a lot of rust right now," Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins said. "He will continue to improve as he gets more comfortable. He's showing what he can do in a half. Putting two halves together is something he needs to learn."
Javon Borum scored 19 points to lead the Highlanders (3-5), who are 1-5 away from home. Phil Martin added 12 points.
"That was the Achilles heel," Highlanders' coach Jim Wooldridge said. "We just couldn't rebound with them. That's disappointing because we've been a pretty good rebounding team but we were obviously a second-tier rebounding team tonight. You're not going to beat a good team giving them those opportunities."
Stanford led 21-14 at the half. Green, who missed all eight of his first-half shots, hit four straight to open the second half and help the Cardinal take a 12-point edge with 15:19 remaining.
"I just try to take what the defense gives me," Green said. "At halftime I went back and thought about why I was missing so much. I wanted to let the game come to me instead of forcing it. I concentrated more on making shots and I settled in."
But the Highlanders came back, and Martin's dunk with 1:45 left drew them within 51-48. But UC Riverside didn't score again and lost their fifth straight in the series against Stanford.
"It really looked like we were on our heels and of all things, maybe just didn't take on that team hard enough to begin with," Wooldridge said. "Owens got us early and it gave Green a chance to do what he needed to do in the second half."
