CHARLESTON, SC-- Stanford Sailing is within striking distance of a top-five finish after the first day of racing at the Bob Bavier Team Race, going 5-9 against the other nine teams.
On the first day of competition, Peter Stemler, Justin Doane and Nick Dugdale skippered their three boats to two wins over the three boats from Clemson and Rhode Island and split its two races with Eckerd. Stanford only lost twice to front-runner Charleston and Roger Williams
College of Charleston and Saint Mary's are both 12-2 after the first 14 races, with Georgetown posting an 11-3 record. The trio are all ranked in the top-10 nationally in either coed or women's sailing.
After the first three teams, and 0-14 Clemson, the other six teams are within four wins of one another, from eight-win Navy and Roger Williams to four-win Eckerd and Rhode Island.
Navy, RW, Stanford, Eckerd and Rhode Island are all ranked in the national top-20, giving the regatta eight teams ranked nationally.
The format of the two-day team event is three round robins between the 10 teams of three boats a piece, resulting in 27 total races.
The regatta continues through Sunday.
