Cardinal Fall In Close Contest With Bruins, 77-73

Feb. 4, 2010

Box Score

LOS ANGELES (AP)- Reeves Nelson scored 18 points and Malcolm Lee hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to preserve UCLA's 77-73 victory over Stanford on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion.

Michael Roll added 16 points, Nikola Dragovic chipped in with 15 and Tyler Honeycutt contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Bruins (11-11, 6-4 Pac-10), who have won four of their last five.

Landry Fields led all players with a career-high 35 points on 13-18 shooting, producing the best offensive performance by a Cardinal player since Chris Hernandez erupted for 37 points in a 78-65 win over UCLA back on Feb. 20, 2005. Fields also grabbed 10 boards, registering his ninth double-double of the year.

"I thought they executed well, making that 15-5 run in the second half," said head coach Johnny Dawkins. "They made key plays down the stretch, and we have to withstand that next time. They did a good job with put-backs. They also had many second-chance opportunities, especially that play when we were down by one."

"That was a great, hard-fought victory for our guys," said UCLA head coach Ben Howland. "Landry Fields is an NBA player. He will make a lot of money playing basketball."

Jeremy Green added 18 points for Stanford (10-12, 4-6 Pac-10), but he missed a three-pointer with 10 seconds left that would have tied the game at 73-73.

The Bruins trailed by six before closing the game on a 23-13 run that gave them a season split with the injury-riddled Cardinal, which won 70-59 last month at Maples Pavilion.

UCLA shot 47.4 percent overall, including a 58.3 percent clip over the final 20 minutes. The Bruins made 18-26 from the charity stripe, owned a slim 35-33 rebounding edge and dished out 19 assists on 27 buckets.

Stanford stayed close thanks to an 11-22 mark from beyond the arc, matching its season-high total of 11 treys achieved against Florida A&M back on Nov. 21 The Cardinal made 10-13 from the foul line.
