Dugdale Wins Division in Maryland

March 21, 2010

MARYLAND-- Nick Dugdale won the “D” division of the Truxtun Umstead Regatta, hosted by Navy, beating out 20 other laser boats in the process to lead the Cardinal in Maryland.

Two hours down the state, the women's two division teams finished in eighth place at the St. Mary's College of Maryland Intercollegiate out of 20 teams, paced by Eliza Richartz and Rebecca King's sixth place showing in the “A” division and Hannah Burroughs and Megan Groves finishing eighth in the “B” division.

Dugdale's second day consisted of two wins, three more runner-up finishes and four third places marks. He finished with 78 points, seven points ahead of Brown's Colin Smith, whose team won the overall coed team title.

Richartz and King likely would have been higher, if they weren't retired after finishing the eighth race, giving them a last place finish in one of the 11 races. On day two, the duo were second, fourth and seventh once, and eighth twice for 91 of the 195 points. Burroughs and King finished in the top-10 six times in 11 races, including five times on Sunday for 104 points.

At the Truxturn, Stanford's “A” and “B” coed divisions both finished in 19th place in their divisions, scoring 293 and 303 points, respectively. Overall Stanford's coed team tallied 899 points for 16th place. Oliver Riihiluoma, also sailing in a laser, finished in 13th place with a total of 225 over the 19 races.

Stanford will remain on the East Coast for spring break, practicing with with the College of Charleston throughout the week. The Coed team will compete at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA next weekend. Part of the team will return to California to sail in the fifth regional regatta at USC. This will be the Coed team's final team racing event before their national qualifiers, which will be hosted at Stanford's Boathouse in Redwood City on April 10-11.
