STANFORD, Calif.-- The University of San Francisco (13-13) scored four runs in the first and No. 19-ranked Stanford (12-7) dropped its second midweek game of the season, falling 5-1 on Monday evening.
Five Don pitchers combined on a four-hitter, as Haden Hinkle (1-0) picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
Stanford, which was coming off a series win over USC to open up Pac-10 play, started freshman Chris Jenkins (0-1), who walked the leadoff batter and then threw a sacrifice bunt attempt into the left field corner for a two-base error.
Jenkins was relieved by Danny Sandrbink who gave up a two-run double to Derek Poppert followed by a two-run homer to Stephen Yarrow (9) to make it 4-0. Yarrow drove in three of the Hilltoppers' five runs, adding a run in the third.
Freshman reliever Dean McArdle struck out a career-best six in three shutout innings after USF took a 5-0 lead in the third. Four Stanford pitchers allowed just one hit after the third inning.
Stanford loaded the bases in the seventh, but Ben Clowe popped up against Joe Oropeza to keep the Dons in front by four runs.
After 140 career starts, shortstop Jake Schlander was not in the starting lineup.
Stanford travels to No. 2-ranked UCLA this weekend for a three-game Easter series starting on Thursday in Westwood, Calif.
