SANTA CLARA, Calif.-- Stephen Piscotty and Jonathan Kaskow each had three hits, each homering for the first time this season, as Stanford (15-13) broke out the bats with a season-high 18 hits, while two-hitting host Santa Clara (14-16) 14-0 on Tuesday night.
After nine runs over the first four innings, the duo hit back-to-back homers in the seventh to make it 12-0. The two drove in five runs and scored seven times, as Colin Walsh added three hits and three runs, giving the Cardinal's first four hitters 11 of the 12 runs.
Meanwhile on the mound, five pitchers combined on a two-hitter, the best performance on the mound by a Stanford staff since two-hitters in 2009 and 2004 and a one-hitter by Manship Cunningham of Santa Clara during the opening weekend of 2003.
Starter Brian Busick (3-1) and Mark Appel combined to retire nine in a row between an inning ending double play in the second and a two-out walk in the fifth as Stanford built a 9-0 lead. Busick gave up a single hit over the first two predetermined innings, and Scott Snodgress gave up the other hit in the seventh.
A two-run single by Kaskow in the first made it 2-0 in the first, before a two-out, two-run single to left by Eric Smith made it 5-0 in the third. Stanford added four more runs in the fourth, chasing starter Chris Mendoza (2-2) from the game in the inning, to lead 9-0.
Bronco left fielder Tommy Medica, a catcher most of his career, was a magnet for balls over the first three innings. He dropped a fly ball on the warning track in the first, misplayed a single into a two-base hit by Kaskow in the third, and dove under Smith's bloop single, also in the third.
Mendoza gave up the first six runs (four earned) on six hits over the first three-plus innings for the loss.
The Cardinal remain on the road this weekend when it travels to Oregon State, beginning on Friday, for a three-game series.p
