STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Jeremy Green had 13 points and Josh Owens added 12 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the year for the Cardinal (10-6, 3-2), which was coming off an upset of No. 17/18 Washington and looking to sustain some momentum.

Instead, the Cardinal fell to Washington State 61-58 Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. It was Stanford's first home loss of the year in nine games.

Stanford had two late attempts to force overtime but couldn't convert. Owens missed the second of two free throws with seven seconds remaining, and Green's desperate 3-point heave at the buzzer rimmed out to give Washington State the victory.

Klay Thompson had 21 points and Faisal Aden scored 20 for Washington State, which outscored Stanford 38-26 in the second half and shot 41.1 percent for the game.

The dynamic guard duo helped the Cougars (13-5, 3-3) overcome a nine-point halftime deficit to win a Pac-10 road game for the first time this season.

Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins
Opening Statement:
"I thought they outplayed us. They gave a winning effort and won the game. I thought Klay Thompson and Faisal Aden really stepped up and gave some good contributions to their team. They did a good job. We all learn from our losses and unfortunately we took one tonight."

On his young squad learning from tonight:
"I think our kids will learn from the experience of what Pac-10 play is and how every single night is a different system. We have to prepare to adjust accordingly and be ready to play at the highest level. You're not going to stop Klay Thompson, you're only going to contain him. I thought our guys did a good job of containing him. He's going to score some points, and he did."

On Stanford's 3-2 start in Pac-10 play:
"We feel we can be competitive. This conference has a lot of good teams. We just played some really good teams, and we feel we can compete. I think our kids learned that lesson and unfortunately you hate to learn that in losses. I think our kids will be better from the experience this weekend."

Freshman Anthony Brown
On the start of the second half:
"We were going into halftime with a nine-point lead, so the first five minutes of the half were key. They hit us in the mouth. We were never able to respond after that. But give them a lot of credit for staying with it and staying until the end. Klay Thompson and Faisal Aden both were scoring with the ball. Overall, they were getting to the basket and making plays. They just stayed with their objective. I saw that the team needed a spark, so when I came into the game, I wanted to give that spark. Coach Dawkins always tells me to be ready."

Washington State head coach Ken Bone:
On breaking through with a 12-1 run in the second half:
"I think our zone defense was pretty good during that stretch. That was probably the biggest difference during that time. And we scored some baskets, too. But we really, really needed to get some stops defensively, and we did."

On his team's offensive adjustments:
"We told our guys after the first three or four possessions to pass the ball and execute our offense. I put it at the top of the white board at halftime: Pass the ball. But it took a while to get to that point. I 'm just glad they did it. We came out early in the second half, like we did at Cal, and that made a huge difference."

Junior Klay Thompson:
Thoughts on tonight's game:
"Playing without Reg (Reggie Moore) tonight, that was a big loss, but we overcame adversity and played really well in the second half. Stanford's good on defense, and yeah, they got in me, but I thought I missed some easy shots, but that happens. I think it was evident that we passed the ball a lot better in the second half, and we got a lot better shots. If we keep doing that we're a tough team to play against. During the (12-1) run, we contested every shot, which I thought we did well." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
