Feb. 15, 2011

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 7 Stanford held off No. 31 Fresno State 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium, improving to 7-0 overall.

Stanford now takes an undefeated record into this weekend's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash, where the Cardinal will face Florida on Friday at 12 p.m.

Tuesday's win also represented the 100th of head coach John Whitlinger's career, as the Cardinal skipper is now 100-52 overall in his seventh season.

With late afternoon rain looming in the forecast, Tuesday's match was moved up one hour to 12:30 p.m.

The Cardinal quickly jumped out to a 1-0 edge in an abbreviated doubles competition. Wins on courts two and three clinched the point for Stanford, while Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly picked up a shortened 6-5 (10-8) victory at the No. 1 spot.

Greg Hirshman put Stanford ahead 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Francis Alcantara at the No. 4 position.

But Fresno State (4-4, 0-0 WAC) grabbed the next two points to even the match at 2-2. Remi Boutillier and Siddharth Alapati posted wins at the Nos. 2 and 6 court to force the tie.

Bradley Klahn battled back for a three-set win at the top spot, downing Rikus de Villiers 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to put Stanford up 3-2.

Denis Lin's 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win on court three provided the clincher.
