Stanford, Calif. - No. 13 Stanford improved to 2-0 with a 21-4 win over Fresno State to open the MPSF season. The Cardinal jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a comfortable victory that included goals from 11 different players.
"We wanted to start off conference play with a win," said head coach Amy Bokker. "The game also allowed us to get everyone playing time and see what options we have going forward."
The Cardinal improved to 4-0 all-time against Fresno State, who is in just its third year as a varsity program.
"Fresno is getting better," said Bokker. "They are more athletic and overall it good for the growth of our conference and the growth of our sport."
Sarah Flynn led the Cardinal with five goals, matching her career high that she has achieved five times. Flynn also went over 100 goals for her career and now stands at 101. She becomes the 10th player in Stanford history to achieve that feat.
Also recording hat tricks for the Cardinal were Emilie Boeri and Leslie Foard. It was the second-consecutive game with a hat trick for Boeri, who is tied for the team lead on goals with Flynn. Foard also had two assists to give her a team-leading eight points on the season.
The other multi-goal scorers were Jacqueline Candelaria and Ryan O'Shea who both came off the bench to offer some offensive firepower. Among the other goal scorers were freshmen Rachel Ozer and Nina Swanson who the first goals of their Stanford careers.
Annie Read earned her second win of the season in goal, but gave way to freshman Lyndsey Munoz at the half. Munoz made two saves in her 30 minutes, the first saves of her young career.
Next up for Stanford is No. 5 Syracuse in another big top-10 game. Stanford opened 2011 by defeating No. 10 Notre Dame and will look for another win against a top Big East opponent. Syracuse topped Stanford 16-7 last season in New York, giving the Cardinal plenty of motivation.
