STANFORD, Calif.- No. 8 Stanford posted its third shutout of the year on Tuesday afternoon, blanking Utah 7-0 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Cardinal (5-0, 0-0 Pac-10) experienced little trouble putting away the Utes (2-3, 0-0 MWC) despite playing with a shuffled lineup. The Cardinal was without the services of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher, who received a wild card entry into the doubles draw of the 2011 SAP Open and were scheduled to play later that evening.
That meant a move up the ladder for Stanford's regulars and a couple rare appearances at the bottom of the lineup.
The tone was established in doubles, with the Cardinal sweeping all three courts. Playing at the No. 1 spot, Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly clinched the point with an 8-4 victory.
Denis Lin gave Stanford a 2-0 lead with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two.
Appearing at the No.1 spot for the second time since his All-American sophomore season, Clayton cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory to put Stanford on the brink.
The clincher came from court three, where Greg Hirshman blazed past Alejandro Medinilla 6-0, 6-3.
Walker Kehrer and Jamin Ball notched their first career dual match wins, with Kehrer prevailing 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and Ball winning 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (8) at No. 6.
Stanford next faces BYU on Friday, Feb. 11, at 1:30 p.m.
