TEMPE, Ariz. - Annika Dries scored five goals to lead all scorers as No. 1 Stanford women's water polo jumped out to a 5-0 first-period lead and never looked back in a 14-3 victory over No. 8 Arizona State in Tempe Saturday.
Stanford improved its season-opening winning streak to 16 games, and improved to 2-0 in MPSF play with the win. The Cardinal returns home for its next contest, hosting No. 4 UCLA next Saturday, March 26 at Avery Aquatic Center.
Along with the five goals from Dries, junior Alyssa Lo added a hat trick of her own with three goals, Melissa Seidemann scored twice and additional goals were added by Monica Coughlan, Jillian Garton, Victoria Kennedy and Kim Krueger.
Amber Oland made eight saves for the Cardinal before giving way to sophomore Kate Baldoni, who stopped a pair of Sun Devil shots.
Five first-period goals staked the Cardinal to a big lead early on. Arizona State would get on the board with a goal in the second frame, but a pair of Stanford goals gave the Cardinal a commanding 7-1 lead at the break.
The Cardinal assault continued into the second half as the team registered another five-goal period in the third, upping its advantage to an insurmountable 12-2. The Cardinal would get two more goals against just one for Arizona State in the final period to go on to victory.
