STANFORD, Calif.-- Long Beach State roughed up Mark Appel (1-3) for six runs, as the Dirtbags (12-9) won the series opener 6-3 over host No. 12-ranked Stanford (8-6) on a cool Friday evening.

SATURDAY'S GAME IS NOW AT 5:30 P.M. DUE TO THE WEATHER.

Appel pitched into the seventh, giving up six runs on 10 hits over 6.2 innings, settling down after LBSU went up 6-0 after four innings.

Andrew Gagnon (3-3) twice worked out of bases loaded jams for the win, pitching the first six innings, giving up two runs on six hits. Eddie Magallon pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

After an RBI triple in the first by Mike Marjama made it 1-0, LBSU took a 3-0 lead in the third off a two-run single from Ino Patron. An RBI single by Jonathan Kim then made it 4-0.

The Dirtbags then went up 6-0 in the fourth off a sacrifice fly and fielding error by Brian Ragira at first.

Stanford loaded the bases in the third only to have Eric Smith strike out to end the threat and keep it at 4-0. After the Cardinal scored two runs in the fifth, Gagnon forced Austin Wilson to ground out with the bases loaded to keep it at 6-2.

The Cardinal left 12 on base on the evening.

NOTES: Center fielder Jake Stewart laid out and robbed Jonathan Kim of extra bases with a catch in the second inning... left fielder Tyler Gaffney, a running back on the football team, made a leap into the visiting bullpen late in the ballgame, going after a foul ball. He did not catch up with it.
