No. 1 Stanford Makes It 17 In A Row With 5-2 Win Over No. 4 UCLA

STANFORD, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford women's water polo bared its defensive teeth Saturday, holding No. 4 UCLA to just two goals in the Cardinal's 5-2 victory over the Bruins at Avery Aquatic Center.

Stanford `s season-opening win streak now reached 17 games as the Cardinal improve to 17-0 overall and 3-0 in MPSF play.

The Cardinal will travel to Davis tomorrow for a 1 p.m. contest against UC Davis.

Annika Dries led the Cardinal with a pair of goals, while Monica Coughlan, Kim Krueger and Pallavi Menon each added a score.

UCLA's Megan Burmeister accounted for both Bruin goals.

In the cage, senior Amber Oland made five saves, while Sami Hill (seven saves) and Caitlin Dement (four) combined to stop 11 shots for UCLA.

Stanford took early control of the contest as Coughlan and Krueger each netted first-period goals to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead. Oland and the defense ceded no ground to the Bruins, posting goose eggs over the first two periods as Stanford took a 4-0 lead into halftime.

Each team scored in the third period, but in the final frame only UCLA managed a goal, but it wasn't enough as the Cardinal claimed the win.
