No. 1 Stanford Takes MPSF Opener With 12-4 Win At No. 9 San Diego State

March 5, 2011

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore two-meter Annika Dries scored a game-high three goals to lead No. 1 Stanford to a 12-4 victory in its MPSF opener at No. 9 San Diego State Saturday.

Stanford (14-0, 1-0 MPSF) will head to Long Beach Sunday to close the weekend with a 12 p.m. non-conference meeting with Long Beach State.

Dries' three goals topped all players in Saturday's win, while Vee Dunlevie, Victoria Kennedy and Melissa Seidemann each scored twice. Cassie Churnside, Kim Krueger and Alyssa Lo netted a goal apiece, as well.

In goal, senior Amber Oland got the call and made seven saves while going the distance.

As has been the case for much of the season, Stanford's offense dug a deep hole for its opponent early on, this time scoring four straight goals to open the contest. Dries got the Cardinal on the board just 30 seconds into the contest, followed by goals from Lo, Kennedy and Krueger before San Diego State pulled one back on Amber Pezzolla's goal with 23 seconds left in the period.

The score stayed at 4-1 for the first half of the second frame, until the Aztecs got another goal to halve the Cardinal lead. But Dunlevie would score twice before the end of the half to give the Cardinal a 6-2 advantage at the break.

Four more goals in the third period would put the Cardinal firmly in control of things with a 10-4 lead, and two more Stanford scores in the final frame completed the Cardinal victory.
