STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Teagan Gerhart hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh as the No. 13 Stanford softball team defeated No. 11 Washington, 2-1, Friday, at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improves to 34-10 overall and 7-6 in the Pac-10, while the Huskies fall to 31-9 on the season and 6-7 in the conference.
Gerhart also picked up the win in the circle, moving to 19-8 on the year. The Norco, Calif., native finished with four strikeouts, while giving up just four hits and no earned runs. Washington freshman Kaitlin Ingelsby took the loss, dropping to 19-6 on the year.
Stanford got on the board first, scoring one run in the bottom of the third. Gerhat reached on a fielder's choice. She then stole second for her 22nd theft of the season. She scored on a single by freshman left fielder Corey Hanewich and an error by Washington second baseman Maggie Wagner.
Washington quickly answered in the fourth with a run of its own. Center fielder Kimi Pohlman reached on an error by Stanford third baseman Michelle Prong. After stealing second, Pohlman advanced to third as first baseman Niki Williams grounded out to Jenna Rich. Pohlman tied the score as Ingelsby singled through the right side.
The game went into the bottom of the seventh still tied at 1-1. Stanford sophomore Alix Van Zandt, pinch hitting for senior Melisa Koutz, was hit by Ingelsby to lead off the inning. A key double by Cardinal right fielder Maya Burns put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Gerhart delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly to score Van Zandt and give Stanford the 2-1 victory.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cardinal against the Huskies. Stanford and Washington will play game two of the three-game series, Saturday, Apr. 30 at 1 p.m.
