IRVINE, Calif. - After tallying a nail-biting overtime win at USC Saturday, top-ranked Stanford cut out all semblance of drama at UC Irvine Sunday, cruising past the Anteaters, 13-4 for the program's 20th straight win.
Stanford (20-0) returns home this weekend, hosting No. 5 Hawai'i Saturday night, April 3 in a 6 p.m. contest at Avery Aquatic Center.
Goalie Kate Baldoni made 11 saves as she went the distance in the cage for the Cardinal's second strong effort from a goalie on the weekend.
Annika Dries led the offensive charge with five goals while Melissa Seidemann scored three times. Cassie Churnside scored twice and individual goals were scored by Vee Dunlevie, Kim Krueger and Alexis Lee.
The Cardinal offense wasted no time making its presence felt in the opening period, as Stanford scored the game's first three goals en route to a 4-1 first-period lead. Baldoni's only goal allowed came on a deflection during a UC Irvine 6-on-5.
Stanford kept up the pressure, as Baldoni continued to anchor the defense while the offense scored four more times in the second frame to make it 8-2 by halftime.
With UC Irvine reeling, the Cardinal pounced, scoring three goals and conceding none in a third period that put Stanford in control at 11-2. Two more goals from each team in the final frame would wrap up the contest and Stanford's 20th straight win to start the year.
