OJAI, Calif.- Freshman Kristie Ahn knocked off USC's Maria Sanchez 7-5, 6-1 on Sunday afternoon to capture the singles title at the Pac-10 Championships, capping an impressive weekend for both Stanford tennis teams with the postseason right around the corner.
Seeded seventh in the tourney draw and ranked No. 25 in the nation, Ahn entered this weekend on a 19-match winning streak and with a 31-3 overall record in her debut season. Simply looking to get healthy and build momentum for the postseason, Ahn upended the country's second-ranked player in Sanchez to earn Stanford's first Pac-10 singles title since Gabriela Lastra defeated USC's Jewel Peterson back on Apr. 28, 2002.
Meanwhile, the pairing of Mallory Burdette and Natalie Dillon took home the Invitational doubles crown with an 8-6 victory over UCLA's Courtney Dolehide and Nina Pantic.
Over on the men's side, Bradley Klahn fell short against USC's Steve Johnson 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the championship singles match pitting the tournament's top two seeds against each other. It was another impressive tournament for Klahn, who was playing in his third singles final in three years.
Two years ago as a freshman, Klahn became the fourth player in school history to win both the Pac-10 singles and doubles championships in the same year. As a sophomore last year, Klahn was the singles runner-up and reached the semifinals in doubles with Ryan Thacher.
Walker Kehrer dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to UCLA's Warren Hardie in the Invitational singles championship.
Both Stanford teams are back in action May 13-15, when the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships get underway.
