GOLD RIVER, Calif. - Stanford men's rowing came away from Sunday's Pac-10 Championships at Lake Natoma with a pair of bronze medals.
The men will now prepare for the IRA National Championships, set to be held from June 2-4 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
"Earning medals in two events, while having the best race of the year in the Novice Eight gives us positive momentum as we head east for the IRA Men's Championships," said Stanford men's rowing head coach Craig Amerkhanian.
That Novice Eight effort in the day's opening race set a good tone for the Cardinal. The boat held fourth place for much of the race, and would finish there with a time of 6:22.7.
In the II Eight race, Stanford would hold third place the entire 2,000 meters. The Cardinal stayed within range of second-place California, but could not make the final strike. Stanford's bronze medal-winning time would be 5:59.0, about 17.5 seconds behind Washington.
The men's main event between the I Eights featured a slugfest between Washington, California and Stanford over the first 1,500 meters. The three boats held their positions, with Oregon State lurking in fourth place, separated by only two seconds after the opening 500 and by about five seconds at the halfway point.
Stanford fell to six seconds back of Washington entering the final 500 meters, but still had enough in the tank to widen the space between it and Oregon State to claim the bronze medal with a time of 5:51.9.
