Stanford Tennis Well-Represented Among ITA Regional Award Winners

More Than Just Tennis Going On At NCAA Championships

One of the nation's finest tennis venues, the Taube Family Tennis Center is playing host to its second combined men's and women's NCAA Tennis Championships, as the tournament's current format was introduced at Stanford in 2006.

In today's edition of Countdown To The Championships, we take a final glance at the postseason schedule over the next two weeks, including a seemingly never-ending list of special events.

The John L. Hinds Director of Tennis Dick Gould, now in his 45th season overall at Stanford. Gould led the Cardinal to 17 national championships (15 NCAA, 2 AIAW) while serving as head coach.

STANFORD, Calif.- The next two weeks are truly a tennis lover's dream, with no shortage of riveting team and individual matches on tap at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

However, in addition to those matches, there are several other special events, activities and banquets scheduled to take place over the next 14 days at the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Championships.

Here is a complete listing of those events, so mark your calendar.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18
Men's and Women's Team Welcome Banquet
Student-athletes and coaches from the participating men's and women's teams will gather for a pre-tournament welcome banquet to be held at Maples Pavilion. Included in the festivities will be the presentation of the NCAA Elite 88 Awards, given to two student-athletes (one male, one female) with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 88 championships. Last year's winners were Stanford's Greg Hirshman and Notre Dame's Colleen Rielley. This event is not open to the public.

USTA College Day Seminar
This event is open to all high school and junior tennis players, their parents and coaches who are interested in learning more about all the opportunities that exist in college tennis. Learn more about the recruiting process, important recruiting rules, what coaches are looking for and what to expect as you transition to college tennis. The information session and panel discussion runs from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Kissick Auditorium inside the Arrillaga Family Sports Center. Cost is $10 per person or $25 per family, and includes a USTA Guide to Tennis on College Campuses, refreshments and a ticket to the NCAA quarterfinal matches later that afternoon. NCAA Tennis Alumni "Play Day"
A social team tennis mixer of former NCAA tennis players is scheduled from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Alpine Hills Tennis Club in Portola Valley. The event is open to former Division I tennis student-athletes. Former players from Stanford, USC, UCLA, Cal and other schools have already signed on to play. Feel free to stop by to watch and socialize. Play Day On The Farm
Kids ages 6-10 are invited to the Stanford Campus Recreation Association from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for a Red/Orange Court "Play Day on the Farm". This low-key round robin event is designed to build confidence in players just beginning match play. Participants also receive a $5 group rate ticket for that day's NCAA Championship matches. Stanford Tennis Alumni Reception
Expected to get underway around 7 p.m., there will be a Stanford Tennis Alumni reception hosted by Craig Johnson at his Woodside home. This event is open to all former Stanford tennis players only. Student-athletes and coaches on the men's and women's side participating in the individual portion of this year's NCAA Championships will gather for a pre-tournament welcome banquet to be held at McCaw Hall in the Alumni Center. At this time, the ITA will also present its national awards. This event is not open to the public.

ITA Men's Hall of Fame Dinner
