STANFORD, Calif.- No. 16 Stanford completed a sweep of its homestand with a victory over another nationally-ranked opponent, this time taking down No. 18 Northeastern 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Turf.
Coming off a 3-2 win over No. 19 Indiana two days ago, Stanford (5-1) followed that effort up with its third victory of the year over a top-20 foe.
Appearing in the top-20 poll for the first time in five years, Northeastern (4-2) could not match up offensively against a powerful Stanford attack that continues to execute at a high level.
The Cardinal held a 10-8 edge in shots while penalty corners were even at 4-4.
Four different players scored for Stanford, which sandwiched a pair of goals around two scores from Northeastern's Crystal Poland, who now has 13 through six games.
Hope Burke gave Stanford a 1-0 lead two minutes into the match, taking a pass from Stephanie Byrne and converting from the right side.
In the 24th minute, Becky Dru notched her team-leading sixth goal off a penalty corner with an assist from Kelsey Harbin. Dru led the Cardinal with four shots.
Tied at 2-2 entering the second period, Stanford went in front with an unassisted goal from Byrne at the 39:32 mark.
Devon Holman provided an insurance score with just two minutes remaining, scoring her second goal of the season off a breakaway from the left side.
Stanford is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Pacific in a 1 p.m. match.
