SEATTLE - Stanford hung tough on the road, but did not have quite enough, falling 2-1 at No. 23 Washington on Friday night. The Cardinal dropped to 4-8-2 (1-4-1 Pac-12), while the Huskies continued its impressive season and improved to 9-3-2 (4-2-0 Pac-12) and look as if they are on the way to the NCAA tournament.
The loss was the fourth road loss of the season to a team currently ranked in the top-25.
The Huskies took the early lead when Jacob Hustedt scored in the 11th minute. Jamie Finch lifted a cross to eh right side, which Hustedt headed home.
The Cardinal came right back, however, as Taylor Amman got the equalizer in the 20th minute. Stanford took a free kick that bounced around in the box and Amman controlled. The senior finished into the top right for his first goal of the season.
The tie score did not last long as Washington retook the lead in the 40th minute. Brent Richards found Abdual Aman on the right side for what turned out to be the game winner.
The Cardinal was outshot 9-3 in the half, but Jason Dodson kept that Cardinal in the game making two saves.
The second half went scoreless, but not for a lack of chances from Stanford. The Cardinal outshot Washington, 5-2 in the half, but was unable to find the equalizer.
The second frame saw the two teams really go at it as seven cards were issued. Despite its efforts, Stanford suffered another tough road defeat. The Cardinal remain winless away from Cagan, dropping to 0-6 on the road this season.
Stanford will have another chance for its first road win on Sunday when it faces Oregon State at 2:30pm. The Cardinal has already defeated the Beavers in the first meeting at Cagan Stadium, 3-2.
