SAN FRANCISCO-- Facing one loss from being eliminated, Stanford won twice to open the day and then finished third at the national match racing championships on the San Francisco Bay on Sunday.
Down 1-0 after losing the first best of three race with St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, skipper Nick Dugdale and his crew of McKenzie Wilson and Kevin Laube won two straight to advance to the the semifinals with eventual champion, Navy. The Midshipmen won 2-0 en route to a 14-2 overall record at the event.
The Cardinal were then placed with South Florida, which had lost 2-1 to Roger Williams University. Stanford then won the single elimination third place race to finish the three-day event with 9-6 over the three days.
Navy beat Roger Williams 2-1 in the finals. Stanford Sailing is now off until the Rose Bowl Regatta in January.
