CHICAGO - The Stanford wrestling team dropped its season opener at Northwestern, 27-8. The dual was held at Marist High School in Chicago, Ill. The Cardinal falls to 0-1-0, while the Wildcats start the year 1-0-0.
The dual began at 125 pounds where Northwestern's Levi Mele recorded a major decision over Stanford junior Matt Sencenbaugh, 13-3, which put the Cardinal down 0-4 in the dual.
Junior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 7 to start the season, returned the favor with a 12-4 major decision over Jameson Oster. Wrestling for the first time at 133 pounds, Mango led 2-1 after the first period. He recorded two more takedowns in the second period, while Oster registered to escapes. Mango finished Oster off with two takedowns and an escape in the third period. The win tied the dual at 4-4, momentarily.
The Cardinal dropped the next four bouts to trail the Wildcats, 17-4. Senior Nick Amuchastegui scored Stanford's final points with a 9-1 major decision over No. 10 Lee Munster. Amuchastegui, ranked No. 1 in the nation at 174 pounds, totaled three takedowns and a reversal, and picked up riding time in the win.
Stanford will continue the opening weekend on Sunday in Dekalb, Ill. The Cardinal will take on North Central College at 10 a.m. PT and Northern Illinois at 12 p.m. PT.
