CHICAGO-- Stanford sophomore Mateo Vargas is in a battle for a top-five finish, while teammates Kieran Chung-Wolf, Kaitlyn Baab and Molly McKinney are in contention for a top-10 finish after the second of three days of sailing at the National Singlehanded Championships.
After a tough first day, Vargas rallied to finish in the top seven in eight straight races to move into fourth place and finish day two with 89 points. After 14 races, he is seven points out of second as the next three spots after Yale's Cam Cullman (56 points) is up for grabs. Vargas ended day one in tenth place. Kieran Chung-Wolf is in 11th place of the 18 competitors with 140 points.
Baab dropped five spots to tenth place after day two, finishing 12th and 15th to start the day, before rebounding with top-nine finishes in six of the final eight races for 116 points. In a close bunching Baab is 13 points out of fifth place. Leader and Boston College's Anne Haeger is running away from the field with 31 points. Stanford's Molly McKinney moved up to 11th place with 133 points.
The Championships finish on Sunday. Last year McKinney was the top Cardinal finisher in sixth place, as a freshman.
