DEKALB, Ill. - The Stanford wrestling team bounced back from a season opening loss to defeat North Central College (35-9) and Northern Illinois (20-13) in Dekalb, Ill. The Cardinal improves to 2-1-0, while the Cardinals fall to 0-2-0 and the Huskies are 1-1-0.
Six Cardinal wrestlers were 2-0 on Sunday. Senior Nick Amuchastegui, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 174 pounds, and junior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 7 at 133 pounds, are both 3-0 to start the 2011-12 season.
In the team's first dual of the day against North Central College, Stanford won seven of the 10 bouts, led by Amuchastegui's fall over Kyle Geary in 1:06. Junior Timmy Boone (149 pounds), junior Spence Patrick (184 pounds) and sophomore Alan Yen (197 pounds) all posted technical fall wins against the Cardinals. Mango, junior Matt Sencenbaugh (125pounds) and sophomore Dan Scherer (heavyweight) also recorded extra points in the dual as Mango and Sencenbaugh registered major decisions and Scherer won by forfeit.
Against the host school Northern Illinois, Stanford tallied six wins to knock off the Huskies. Amuchastegui and Mango again led the team with both wrestlers securing major decisions. Boone, Patrick, Yen and Scherer were all victorious for the second time on Sunday.
True freshman Alex Manley made his Cardinal debut against North Central College. He fell 5-0 to Andrew Zobac at 141 pounds. He also dropped his match against Northern Illinois, 9-3.
Stanford will play host CSU Bakersfield and Menlo College on Sunday, Nov. 13 to open its home slate. The Roadrunners and Oaks will square off against each other at Noon, while the Cardinal will face the Roadrunners at 2 p.m. and the Oaks at 4 p.m. All three duals will be held in Burnham Pavilion.
