Ipsen and Dumais Move Onto Monday in 3-Meter

Dec. 18, 2011

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen and graduate Dwight Dumais each moved onto the semifinal round of the 3-meter springboard after finishing second and ninth respectively on Sunday.

Ipsen finished 2.70 points out of first place with 493.00 points, just behind Chirs Colwill's leading score of 495.70 and ahead of Drew Livingston's mark of 488.20. Dumais was ninth with 415.65 points as the top-18 advanced to Monday's semifinals and finals.

After faultering on his third dive, an inward 3 1/2 somersault tuck resulting in 6.5's and a score of 66.30, Ipsen rebounded to score 8.5's or above on his final three dives. On a  forward 2 1/2 somersault twist he scored 90.10 points paced by four 9.0's from the seven judges. He secured 92.75 points on his toughest dive, a reverse 2 1/2 somersault tuck for 92.75 points and two 9.5's. Ipsen had better head-to-head scores on four of his six dives with Colwill and Livingston.

Dumais rebounded after a couple of tough dives on Sunday. After solid 8.5's on his first and second dives, he scored 5.5's and 48.00 points on a back 2 1/2 somersault. He rebounded with 7.5's on a reverse 2 1/2 somersault and twist for 7.5's, but then scored 5.0's on a reverse 3 1/2 somersault for 52.50 points. Needing a strong finish, Dumais scored 9.0's on his final dive for 88.40 points on a forward 2 1/2 somersault.

Ipsen, with his win yesterday in the 3-meter synchro, is already a member of the world cup team, set to compete in London on February 20-26. That meet is a qualifier for the 2012 Olympics, also in London.
